NEW to Sierra Soccer?

Welcome! Are you trying to figure out how to get your child registered on a team? Not sure what the difference is between the Select and the Rec program? We have a few answers to your questions...

We provide soccer programs for children from 4 to 18. An age matrix to help you understand what level your child will play. We try to keep our teams age pure, so that players are playing against competition of their same age and same basic level of talent and maturity. In general, we only make rare exceptions to this rule in order to make sure there is a place for everyone to play.

Our registration process starts in April and runs through September. (View Registration Page.)

  • For returning players, you simply use our online application and mail to registrar or register at one of our events.
  • For all players, you can take advantage of our online registration process or you can attend one of our walk-in registration events.
  • We also make the registration forms and instructions available online so that you can download them, fill them in, and then either mail them in or bring them to a walk-in session.
  • For new players, we will require a copy of their birth certificate. We also require from all players a 1” x 1” picture of your child’s face to be placed on their player pass that we create.

You can purchase uniforms at any of our registration events. We will have all sizes there so that you can bring your child to try on the uniform for proper fit. Once we finish the registration events, you can still purchase a uniform through our registrar. Each player must also purchase shin guards at any sporting goods store and we highly recommend that each player purchase his/her own soccer ball to bring to practice and for practicing at home. Most players wear soccer cleats, which also can be purchased at a number of stores in the area, but they are not required. They do help with traction on the field, so we do recommend them.

Our Recreational program (Rec) is available for whoever wants to play. There are no tryouts or pre-requisites. If you register your child, we will get them on a team. At the younger ages we try to place children from the same school together on teams so that they will know their teammates and see them on a regular basis. We try to keep players together on the same team each year. In the upper age groups, as our number of players starts to decline, we try to keep the number of players balanced across teams to make them all competitive. As the children get older, the number of players on a team increases as they begin playing on larger fields and play longer ames.

Starting with the U9 age group, we provide two levels of soccer, based upon skill and ability. Our Rec program continues all the way through U19, but at the U9 age group, we also offer our Select program (Select). The Select program requires that a player attend tryouts and be selected, based upon ability, by the coaches. At each age group, we try to have two teams each year with a minimum of one team per age / gender. It costs nothing to try out, but the Select season is longer and there are additional costs that can range from $200 - $500, depending upon the team and how well they do with fundraising. The extra costs are to pay for uniforms, tournaments, trainers, equipment, and other items required by the team. Our Select teams wear a different uniform than our Rec teams and these uniforms change about every third year, due to the changes made by uniform manufacturers. This year, we are in the 2nd year of the Adidas uniform kit. This means after next year we will be purchasing new uniforms for select soccer teams.

Practices for the Select teams start in May/June and practices for the Rec program begin in August. Practices are two nights a week on either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. The coach of each team submits preferences for practice days, practice times (early or late), and practice locations. Our Field Coordinator than attempts to balance the requests to honor them as best possible.

Both Rec and Select league play season begins in September and each team will play 10 games scheduled on Saturdays, running until just before Thanksgiving. Most games are scheduled in the mornings, but some games may fall into early afternoon due to field scheduling requirements. Some of the older teams may play later into the day and with the possibility of evening away games under the lights. Teams starting games from U6- U19, Rec teams play against other teams in our league from the Sunrise, Fair Oaks, Folsom, Rancho Cordova, and Orangevale clubs. You will be traveling to their field for half of your games, but we schedule the other half of your games at Sierra Soccer home fields (depending on age).

Teams are placed into divisions in order to attempt to place teams with other teams that are similar in skill and ability. In the middle of the season, we assess the scores and records thus far to see which teams may need to move up or down a division to give them the level of competition that is right for that team. We want all players to experience the joy of victory in some games, but we also try to balance the abilities the teams so that your child is in an environment in which he/she can compete. This is not an exact science and at the U9 and above age groups, we must perform this balancing act across multiple soccer clubs.

Each child is to play at least 50% of each game, and we highly encourage the coaches to play each child at different positions to let them experience all aspects of the game.
